Project Spotlight: Creating an Outdoor Living Space in St. Catharines

Back to Blog

When this St. Catharines homeowner approached us, she had a simple goal: make the backyard feel like a true extension of her home. She wanted a space where she could host family and friends, spend more time outdoors, and create a backyard that felt welcoming, functional, and reflective of her style.

The property had potential, but it wasn’t being used to its fullest. Through thoughtful landscape design and careful landscape construction, we transformed a bare backyard into a complete outdoor living space featuring an outdoor kitchen, dining area, natural stone patio, fire feature, covered seating area, and low-maintenance landscaping.

The result is a backyard that feels both modern and comfortable—designed for entertaining while remaining practical for everyday use.

The Challenge

One of the biggest challenges with this project was balancing limited space with big ambitions.

The homeowner had several items on her wish list, including an outdoor kitchen, dining area, fire feature, covered seating space, and potentially a swimming pool. As with many residential properties in the Niagara Region, there was only so much room available in the backyard.

The site also included several overgrown cedar trees and an aging deck that no longer suited the homeowner’s needs. In addition, the backyard became extremely hot during the summer months, making it less enjoyable during the times of year it should have been used most.

The key question became: how could we maximize the available space while creating a backyard that would actually be used every day?

After several design discussions, we determined that dedicating a large portion of the yard to a pool would limit the functionality of the space. Instead, we focused on creating multiple outdoor living zones that would provide greater value and flexibility for entertaining.

The Design & Construction Process

Every successful backyard transformation starts with understanding how the homeowner wants to use the space.

For this project, entertaining was the primary focus. Rather than designing around a single feature, we created a layout that encouraged movement and interaction throughout the backyard.

The first step involved removing the existing deck and overgrown cedar trees. This immediately opened the site and created opportunities to improve circulation and sightlines throughout the property.

From there, we developed a design that guides visitors naturally through the space. An inviting walkway along the side of the home leads into the backyard, gradually revealing each destination area instead of exposing everything at once.

Material selection played a significant role in achieving the final look. We chose products that complemented the home’s architecture while providing durability and low maintenance.

The outdoor kitchen and paver elements were constructed using concrete paver products, while custom countertops helped create a polished, built-in appearance. A premium barbeque serves as the centrepiece of the cooking area.

For the main gathering space, we selected jumbo natural flagstone. The natural textures and variation within the stone create a timeless look that blends beautifully with the surrounding landscape.

To address the intense summer heat, a covered dining area was incorporated using a louvred pergola. This provides welcome shade while maintaining an open, airy feel throughout the backyard.

Low-maintenance plantings were used to soften hardscape edges and add seasonal interest without creating excessive upkeep requirements.

Project Features

Outdoor Kitchen

The outdoor kitchen serves as one of the primary focal points of the backyard.

Designed around the homeowner’s love of hosting, the kitchen provides everything needed for outdoor cooking and entertaining. The integrated BBQ, durable countertops, and surrounding patio space allow guests to gather comfortably while meals are being prepared.

Rather than separating the cook from the rest of the gathering, the layout encourages conversation and interaction. This creates a more social experience and helps the outdoor kitchen function as an extension of the home’s indoor living space.

Lounging & Fire Feature

While the outdoor kitchen supports active entertaining, the natural stone patio provides a place to relax and unwind.

The jumbo flagstone patio is our favourite feature of the entire project. Its natural character creates visual warmth and authenticity that manufactured materials simply cannot replicate.

A fire feature anchors the space and creates a natural gathering area. Whether hosting friends on a summer evening or enjoying a quiet night outdoors, the fire feature extends the usability of the backyard well beyond daylight hours.

Adjacent covered seating provides additional comfort and flexibility throughout the season.

Landscape Lighting

Outdoor lighting was carefully integrated throughout the project to enhance both safety and atmosphere.

Fixtures illuminate key gathering spaces, pathways, and landscape features, while step lighting improves visibility and accessibility after dark.

The goal was not simply to brighten the backyard, but to create layers of light that make the space feel inviting and functional in the evening.

Drainage

As with any successful landscape construction project, what happens below the surface is just as important as what homeowners see above it.

Proper grading and drainage considerations were incorporated throughout construction to ensure water moves away from structures and gathering areas. By addressing drainage during the build process, we help protect the longevity of the patio, outdoor kitchen, and surrounding landscape features.

The Finished Result

Today, this St. Catharines backyard feels completely different from the space we first encountered.

What was once an underutilized yard with an aging deck is now a thoughtfully designed outdoor living environment that supports everything the homeowner envisioned.

Guests are welcomed down a beautifully designed side-yard walkway before entering an inviting entertaining space. The outdoor kitchen and dining area make hosting effortless, while the natural stone patio and fire feature create a comfortable place to gather long after dinner is finished.

The covered seating area provides relief from the summer sun, and carefully selected plantings add texture, colour, and privacy without demanding extensive maintenance.

Most importantly, the homeowner now has a backyard she genuinely wants to use.

Why This Project Works

Open wooden gate leads to a patio with chairs, umbrella, and lush greenery under soft, evening light. Cozy backyard setting.

Several key principles helped make this project successful:

  • Prioritize function before features. Every element was selected based on how the homeowner wanted to use the space.
  • Don’t force oversized features into undersized yards. Choosing flexible entertaining spaces over a pool ultimately created a more usable backyard.
  • Create distinct activity zones. Cooking, dining, lounging, and gathering each have their own purpose while remaining connected.
  • Invest in quality materials. Natural stone, premium hardscape products, and durable outdoor furnishings contribute to long-term value.
  • Consider comfort. Shade, lighting, and thoughtful layout decisions can dramatically increase how often a backyard is used.

For homeowners throughout St. Catharines and the Niagara Region, this project demonstrates how thoughtful landscape design can transform even a modest backyard into a highly functional outdoor living space.
